Often described as a “dark themed photographer with a quirky sense of humor”, James King's work avers many things and tends to be construed differently by everyone. Gothic, fetish, and glam-trash are just some of the various themes that he explores with his images.
He likes creating dichotomy. Sometimes a particular image may contain several contradictory elements, intermingling subjects such as beauty, sex, decay, and humor to tell a story, thus making it hard to put his most of his work in a single category.
The females in James' photos are always strong figures. Most of the time they are placed in undesirable environments, but they never seem trapped by these surroundings. These women are powerful, yet they always stay true to their feminine emotions.
Take one part twisted humor and one part overt sexuality, with a dash of white-trash sensibilities and what do you have? Why, the photography of one James King! Whether he’s taking you on a long-slow ride through a fetish fantasy, complete with all the accoutrements of the trade or on a fast-paced jaunt through the seediest parts of “Americana”, his photographs convey a sense of purpose. The feeling that though your day to day life might not always be the most stimulating experience, you always have JKing Photography to whip you into a frenzy. His subjects are darkly beautiful but far from safe and his settings are never sanitary, and oft times downright septic…and isn’t that what we all want in the end? A chance to glimpse a world most people rarely, if ever visit, an opportunity to experience a taste of forbidden fruit a sample of something unhealthy?
